چکیده

Uptake of mercury (Hg) through fish consumption is one of the key aspects of the Hg cycle in the aquatic ecosystems. In tropical latitudes, biomonitoring of Hg in freshwater reservoirs is scarce. The objectives of the study were to determine Hg distribution in muscle, liver, and kidney of blue tilapia Oreochromis aureus from a dam located in a mining region of northwest Mexico, to define temporal variations of Hg concentrations in fish collected during the dry and rainy seasons, and to estimate the percentage weekly intake (PWI) of Hg through fish consumption considering the individual weekly intake of fish in Mexico and the provisional tolerable weekly intake of Hg (5 μg kg(-1) body weight). The sequence of Hg concentrations was liver > kidney > muscle during the rainy season and kidney > liver > muscle during the dry season. Levels of Hg were significantly higher (p < 0.001) in muscle (0.36 μg g(-1)) and kidney (0.65 μg g(-1)) of specimens collected during the dry season in comparison to individuals collected during the rainy season; accordingly, average PWI in the dry season (5.41) was higher than in the rainy season (1.80). Though collected fish were adults, Hg levels in the edible portion are not harmful to consumers, even during the dry season that Hg levels were higher.

Production of genetically male tilapia through interspecific hybridization between Oreochromis niloticus and O. aureus

This study was conducted to produce a high percentage of genetically male tilapia through interspecific hybridization between Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus and Blue tilapia, O. aureus and evaluate sex ratio, productive performance and heterosis of the progeny produced. The results revealed that sex ratios of the progenies of (♀ O. aureus x ♂ O. niloticus) and (♀ O. niloticus x ♂ O. aureus...

Growth, mortality and reproduction of the blue tilapia Oreochromis aureus (Perciformes: Cichlidae) in the Aguamilpa Reservoir, Mexico.

Tilapia production has increased in Aguamilpa Reservoir, in Nayarit, Mexico, in the last few years and represents a good economic activity for rural communities and the country. We determined growth parameters, mortality and reproductive aspects for 2413 specimens of blue tilapia Oreochromis aureus in this reservoir. Samples were taken monthly from July 2000 through June 2001, of which 1 371 we...

Reproductive biology of Oreochromis niloticus (Perciformes: Cichlidae) at Emiliano Zapata dam, Morelos, Mexico.

The reproductive season of tilapia was studied by monthly samplings at Emiliano Zapata dam, Morelos State, Mexico. From February 1999 through February 2000 a sample of 50 fish was taken from the commercial catch (castnet, 6.5 cm of mesh size). The observed sex ratio was 1:1.29 (females:males) (chi(2)=10.26; p<0.05). The tilapia reached maturity at 151.3 mm (females) and 152.0 mm (males) of tota...

Filtration Rates of Catfish Pond Phytoplankton by Nile Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus

Filter-feeding fishes have been examined as biological controls of phytoplankton populations. Although increased phytoplankton biomass resulted in approximately 50% of studies and no effect in 25% (Smith 1988), changes in species composition and dominance have been noted. For example, blue tilapia Oreochromis aureus reduce or eliminated blue-green (Cyanobacteria) and green (Chlorophyta) net phy...
